Facing the sun

from 14 September 2022 to 29 January 2023

In 2022 the Musée Marmottan Monet will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Claude Monet’s Impression, soleil levant (Impression, Sunrise), the centerpiece of its collection. For this occasion, the Parisian institution is joining forces with the Museum Barberini in Potsdam, also a collector’s museum, which possesses Le Port du Havre, effet de nuit (The Port of Le Havre, Night Effect), the nocturnal counterpart of the work in Paris, to organize an exhibition with provisional title The Sun: Source of Light in Art.
This exhibition will take place at the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris from 14 September 2022 to 29 January 2023, and at the Museum Barberini in Potsdam from 25 February to 11 June 2023. Curated by art historians Marianne Mathieu, Scientific Director of the Musée Marmottan Monet, and Dr. Michael Philipp, Chief Curator at the Museum Barberini, the exhibition will trace the depiction of the sun in art from antiquity to the present day, on a chronological and thematic examination of more than sixty works from private and public international collections.
