The temporary café “Le Jardin Marmottan” is open for the whole summer, and for the first time, to museum visitors, offering a selection of refreshing drinks and ice creams, as well as fresh daily delicacies prepared by a local artisan baker.
The Musée Marmottan Monet and the Musée de Grenoble are jointly presenting an exceptional exhibition devoted to landscape painting from 1890 to the present day. Entitled Histories of Landscape: From Monet to Hockney (1890–2025), it will be on view in Paris from 24 September 2026 to 31 January 2027, then in Grenoble from 5 March to 4 July 2027.
Curated by Pierre Wat, professor at Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne University and is director of the HiCSA research centre, the exhibition will trace the evolution of landscape painting from its nineteenth-century triumph through to its contemporary reinventions. Although the genre appeared to recede in the twentieth century in the face of ideological and historical upheavals, landscape persisted, transformed itself and remained a major force in artistic creation.
As part of the commemorations marking the centenary of Monet’s death, the event will highlight a dialogue between Monet’s work and that twentieth- and twenty-first-century artists.
The magnificent townhouse with its perfectly preserved Empire-style decor was once owned by Paul Marmottan and is now home to the Musée Marmottan Monet. In addition to its collection of pre-modern paintings, sculptures and illuminations, it boasts the world’s leading collections of works by Claude Monet and Berthe Morisot. This outstanding Impressionist treasure is further enriched by works from Delacroix, Boudin, Manet, Degas, Caillebotte, Sisley, Pissarro, Gauguin and Rodin, with Chagall representing the modernist period.
The Museum houses the world’s biggest collection of works by Monet. Alongside the iconic Impression, Sunrise, some hundred masterpieces bequeathed by the painter’s family and close friends offer an unmatched panorama of the art of the leading Impressionist, from landscapes in Argenteuil to Rouen Cathedral and on to a unique ensemble of Water Lilies and views of the garden in Giverny. Dashingly executed in pastel tones, bucolic scenes, rural landscapes and portraits of “young girls in flower” illustrate the talent of Berthe Morisot, the first woman Impressionist. This ensemble bequeathed by her descendants constitutes the biggest public collection of this artist’s work, unmatched anywhere in the world. It comprises more than 25 oil paintings as well as rare watercolours and pastels. A remarkable collection and a real must for visitors.
